I’ve had this song in my head all week and I’ve started wondering, what is she saying? Is she actually asking that we don’t ask and stay out of it, or is it more like sarcasm or apathy, in which she assumes they won’t ask anyway?
From the rest of the song I think it’s the former because she seems to blame herself for the abuse and says “it’s not your business anyway”.
So what is this song doing? Is it discouraging people from getting involved with/trying to help in situations of domestic abuse? Is it just expressing what it is like to be a victim of abuse? showing us that they might blame themselves, and feel like they have no choice, and be resigned to their fate?
I like this song; it’s catchy and has all kinds of nostalgic value, but sometimes I wonder what kind of message it sends. We need to be willing to discuss issues, help each other understand our situation, and have permission to care for each other.
(I’m not a victim of abuse, but I have discussed other issues here in a spirit of openness and education, and I think the same principle might apply.)
