IFTTT: if this then that

if instagram then dropbox

You might have heard of If This Then That. I had, but hadn’t gotten to using it. Then a client asked about plugins for publishing new post links to Facebook and I realised I wasn’t happy with the plugin I was using for posting links to Facebook and Twitter. Enter IFTTT!

The basic idea of IFTTT is that when it detects “this” (whatever trigger you specify), it does “that” (an action that you specify). You can read more about it on the IFTTT about page. It can connect with Google, Dropbox, Evernote, Twitter, Facebook… currently 49 services in total.

It is so easy to use! It’s great for just broadcasting your blog and social media posts, but it can do so much more than that too. You can receive alerts via SMS, email and Pushover for whatever trigger you create, you can use it as a bookmark tool (I just activated a recipe to save my favourite tweets in an Evernote note), or a backup tool (the example in the recipe at the top of this post saves Instagram images to Dropbox), and loads of other ways, I’m sure.

I wanted to make a recipe to automatically add events from Facebook to Google Calendar, but Facebook events are not an accepted trigger yet: I hope this one will be included in the future!

Get on it and connect up your internet life!

If you’re already on it, what recipes are you using? Let me know in the comments!

Definitely one of the coolest things out there right now. I love that it will automate so much of what we might otherwise have done manually.

    hello Kristen.
I have a question to you that should go below an article about footers. It is a bit off topic here, but I would appreciate your help.
Do you know how to create, or where to find the information on how to do it:
a footer that is above the standard widgetized footer? I need a footer that will be used for the icons, just like it has been done on the London 2012 site:

the site I am working on is: http://www.sportfestival.pl

    thank you
    Martyna
