Sad day

23 June 2008 by kristarella

Jane McGrath, wife of the cricketer Glenn McGrath and founder of the McGrath Foundation, passed away yesterday.

After (and during) her battle with Breast Cancer, Jane McGrath became a spokeswoman for breast cancer awareness, and actively worked to provide support for women with Breast Cancer in remote areas, where help is not readily available. She was obviously a warm, caring, enthusiastic and inspiring woman.

Please spare a thought, and/or a prayer for the people whose lives Jane touched, directly and indirectly. She was an inspiration to many women, including my mum. Please visit the McGrath Foundation website to read more about Jane’s passing and the vision that created the foundation.

This post is titled Sad day because while the passing of Jane McGrath is sad… I have some sadness closer to home: my grandmother (on my Dad’s side) was diagnosed with cancer today. We don’t know much more than that at this point; she might have months or a year to live. I’m not very surprised, although a little given her family history (her mother lived to be over 100). Her health hasn’t been 100% for a while. It’s still a sad and slightly confusing time though. I hope that we can all get through it gracefully and have as few regrets as possible in the time we have left with her.

Sorry to hear that Kristarella. I hope things work out somehow. You’ll get through. I just hope it’s not too rough on you. 🙁

It’s terribly sad that your family is having to go through this experience again. I’m sure that your grandmother knows how much you love her. Being there for her is the very best that you can do right now. I found it very hard to hear about Jane McGrath over the weekend because it brought back memories and emotions from last year when my husband had treatment for cancer (fortunately he is in remission now), and earlier in the year I lost a loved uncle to leukaemia. My thoughts go to your grandmother and your family.

sorry to hear the news. sad day it is. your grandmother will be in my thoughts and prayers.

my mum was diagnosed with advanced stomach cancer September last year. she has since had a total gastrectomy and was today admitted in hospital with an intestinal blockage (caused by a tumour, no doubt). surgery is planned but it’s still a wait-and-see situation seeing that her health isn’t all that great. but we will try to do whatever we can.

    Thanks for your replies everyone!

Very glad your husband is in remission Tracey! Not sure what I’d do if something like that happened to my husband…

Nick, I’m so sorry about your mum. I hope that that surgery goes well. I’ll be praying for you all.

I’m praying for you, Kris. God is in the business of miracles, you know! Is your Gramma a Christian?

    Thanks Lauren.

She is a Christian. It can be a bit hard to tell with her; if you take it from the James “show me your faith without works and I’ll show you my faith by what I do” perspective, which is really all we can do since we’re not God. She’s had dementia for a little while and may have had an undiagnosed personality disorder before that (we suspect). She would have said Jesus is Lord though.

I am glad to hear that, though it is still a hard time. But you’ll get to really know her in heaven some day! That is an exciting thought.

Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Title Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Titles! I was a sub for @jamesxuereb.me in the Blue Flame Dragons thanks to his sprained ankle; we won first round and came fourth overall!
I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
