Death Proof: a movie by Quentin Tarantino

4 November 2007 by kristarella

Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof

We saw Death Proof tonight. It was a choice between that and Death at a Funeral. Gee, did it feel like the wrong choice.

Glenj summed it up nicely when he said “The best part of that movie was the Beowulf trailer at the start.”

An IMDB reviewer was right on when they said,

Tarantino can’t help but overload his scenes with meaningless meandering, almost as if he has reached the point of aimless directorial swaggery.

Technically they were also correct in saying,

No Tarantino film could ever bore you aesthetically, or indeed talk you to death with insipid dialogue.

I wasn’t bored aesthetically (just mentally) and I’m not dead, but seriously! That dialogue was insipid. Whining, bitching, misguided, annoying wenches out on the road together. As if there isn’t enough of that in real life, I was supposed to be entertained by that?

There were a few redeeming features. Not enough to redeem the whole movie, just enough for me to not think that Quentin Tarantino should be hung. The first car crash was pretty cool, in a nasty kind of way. There was an Aussie/Kiwi joke in there. Zoe Bell jumping out of the bushes yelling “I’m okay!” was classic.

I give it no stars.

I’ve not seen this yet and I’m in no rush to do so. Tarentino’s films just aren’t the same these days as when he first started. His first that I saw was From Dusk til Dawn and it just out classes all his recent work sadly. I’ll catch this one telly one day in the future, but until then it can wait 🙂

I was disappointed because even though I didn’t really enjoy Pulp Fiction when I saw it all that time ago I loved Kill Bill. I’d actually forgotten what the movie was about though, I didn’t remember the trailer until we got in there. The trailer didn’t interest me at all!
I must admit, I thought Kurt Russell acted that part really well though.
Good call – it can wait until TV!

Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Title Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Titles! I was a sub for @jamesxuereb.me in the Blue Flame Dragons thanks to his sprained ankle; we won first round and came fourth overall!
I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
