Awful Grandchildren

16 September 2007 by kristarella

party hat

Oh my goodness! Last night was both excellent and awful, not in that order.

There we were, husband and I, sitting on the couch eating some Asian pastry things, watching You Tube videos and an episode of Battlestar Galactica. I got an unexpected call on my mobile from my father-in-law asking where we were. Holy moly! We’d forgotten dinner in Wolloomooloo for my husband’s Nana’s 80th birthday! Well, I pretty much panicked, told my husband what had happened, ripped off my sudo t-shirt for something slightly more birthday-party-like, pulled on my boots and we jumped in the car to head to the city (thank goodness we’d both already showered after karate that morning!).

I looked up where we were going in the street directory and hoped that the restaurant wouldn’t be too hard to find (especially since I only had a vague idea of what the place was called). Then spent most of the car trip wondering how something like that happens and hoping that people wouldn’t be too annoyed. I suppose there’s not much you can do once you’ve forgotten something – if you knew you’d forgotten you could remember, but when it’s completely exited your brain, what can you do? I had tried to be diligent in transferring things from my diary, which is where the details were recorded, to our Google calendar. Apparently that event slipped through the cracks (I’m going to check everything in my diary again!).

Once we got there Nana was pleased to see us and I think I saw some grumpiness from one person, but it seemed to subside by the end of the night. Dinner was really nice, the wine was excellent and everyone had a nice time. Nana was over the moon with the whole thing, she loved having family around and the setting was really lovely. We were at Kingsley’s Steak and Crabhouse. We had a table at the top of some stairs and between us and the other upstairs tables was the upstairs bar (that no one was at), so it felt like a private affair with a view of the water. It was very beautiful.

For dinner I had Ginger and Chilli Prawns and Creme Brulee with a glass of Botrytis Reisling for dessert. Sooooo much better than the canned soup we were going to have!!!

All’s well that ends well I suppose. :sheepish:

We were about 2 hours late 😯
Yes… it’s an experience. Sadly we’ve done it once before (with a different group of people), you have no idea how much I hope we never do it again, otheriwse we’ll get a reputation!

Incidentally – did you mean to use “yous” or was that a typo?

oh no two hours late! well at least your father-in-law called you and didn’t wait until everything was over to do so. ginger and chilli prawns sounds yummy. at least everyone had a nice time int he end. 🙂

btw: not sure about whether it was a typo but “yous” is a southern thing here in the states.

Haha, ok – ‘yous’ is a bit of a westie thing here, but it’s considered an uneducated thing, rather than colloquial. I wouldn’t accuse Michael of that though, he writes very well on his blog 😛

Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Title Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Titles! I was a sub for @jamesxuereb.me in the Blue Flame Dragons thanks to his sprained ankle; we won first round and came fourth overall!
I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
