Handy (free) software for Mac

28 June 2007 by kristarella

Cruising through i use this I came across some cute and useful looking programs.

image well picture editing software

Image Well is a lightweight program for quickly editing images ready for web publishing.

sidenote note taking software

Sidenote is a note-taking program that stays available, but out of your way in case you need to jot something down. I decided not to install this one, I don’t really have a need for notes that often and I don’t want to get too crazy downloading every program that looks good.

Schoolhouse helps you organise your class work so that you know when your assignments are due and you have easy access to your school/uni/college related files. I’ve installed this and put in the dates for the next semester. That’s as far as I’ve gotten since my enrollment isn’t even finalised yet. It can even keep track of your grades. It seems that this program does all in one what I’ve been doing with two or three programs this semester. Sweet!

Wikipedia Widget. I’ve got a dictionary widget and a translator widget, thought the Wikipedia widget might come in handy too.

skim pdf software

Skim looks similar to Preview in terms of features for reading and editing PDFs. I was pretty excited when I saw it, but I’m not convinced yet that it extends on Preview enough to make it worth my installing another program on my computer. Upon another look, the notes may be better than in Preview. I think I’ll have to check it out. 😛

OmniDiskSweeper sweeps your hard drive for files and ranks them in size order so that you can see what’s taking up all that hard disk space. If you pay for the full version you get a delete button, which can delete files from within the program. If you don’t, you can use it to scan the files and then just delete them from Finder.

Just in case those files you wanted to delete were hidden, you can reveal them in Finder by entering defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE into the command line.

Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Title Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Titles! I was a sub for @jamesxuereb.me in the Blue Flame Dragons thanks to his sprained ankle; we won first round and came fourth overall!
I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
