When I first got my MacBook I searched for ages for a decent Text Editor. Text Edit was usable but perhaps too light-weight for wanting to edit html and such. I couldn’t find a nice, free, piece of software so I just used Text Edit and jEdit when I really felt the need for syntax colouring.
Last night however, I ran into a problem with Text Edit. It was giving some data that I had to graph some funky line endings such that gnuplot couldn’t find the rest of the data after line one. Hubby introduced me to Smultron, which I’m actually using to write this post on the train. It looks pretty sweet. It started up quickly, it has a clean, simple interface with colourful buttons, line numbering, you can have multiple files open and easily switch between them via the bar on the left. The feature I valued most in Text Edit (for writing posts and longer discussion board posts), spell checking, is also included in Smultron!
This software is so cute, from the strawberry icon to the quick start-up to the mass of features, many of which I have no idea how to use but they’re not getting in my way. I’m off to delete jEdit (among other things) and free up some hard disk space. 😀
