It’s very nearly the first of February. I’ll go to sleep and if I’m lucky when I wake up it will be February (lucky because that should mean I had a good night of sleep and didn’t wake up).
Our wedding anniversary is the 12th of February. This year we will have been married for two years. They’ve been a pretty darn good two years, I think. They’ve had a few downs but I think overall things were on the up-side. I was really looking forward to this anniversary. You see, we started small with anniversaries; last year we had to make something out of paper (the first anniversary is the paper one, I don’t know why they’re assigned materials), and we went for a picnic to the place where he asked me to marry him. It was nice, it was also nice and small, which means that each year can get just a tiny bit bigger. This year we’re doing presents of cotton, yes – the second year is the cotton anniversary. I think my idea is pretty cool, I hope I can get it done quickly and without running into road-blocks. It’s simple enough to do but there’s always room for error.
Sadly, hubby didn’t get out of jury duty. He got called up for jury duty starting from the 12th February (when they pick the jurors), the trial is estimated to run for 18 weeks! I’m so scared they’re going to pick him. He’s very intelligent and objective, he’d probably make a good juror (unless the defendant was entirely guilty and the defence wanted stupid jurors), but what is going to happen to his PhD if he has to take 18 weeks off?! He was supposed to be finishing his PhD in about that time. Anyway, it also dampens any potential dinner plans and since I was looking forward to it and I’ve been a bit emotional today I’m pretty sad about it.

That stinks! Won’t they give him an exception if he explains that he’s a student? They do that here in the US…I got called when I was in college and I explained that I couldn’t take time off b/c I was studying. They said “No problem!” and put me back in the pool.
Also, I’m intrigued by what you’ll be making out of cotton.
I know, it’s dumb. He sent them a letter, or filled out a form saying that he was a student. Maybe they thought because he’s doing a PhD and doesn’t have classes he could postpone his stuff. Or they had so many people trying to drop out of an 18 week trial they had to choose the best excuses. I don’t know. There’s still the choosing process so if we’re lucky he won’t get chosen. The other thing is money – if he gets chosen then either he gets paid his scholarship, it runs out and he has to finish his PhD without much money. Or he postpones his scholarship, gets paid a little by the courts and we might not make rent and bills.
Ugh, I hope he doesn’t get chosen. Maybe his supervisor who just returned from holidays has some more ideas.
I doubt they pick him. They most generally don’t like intelligent jurors. They like ones that they can manipulate.
Well that sucks. While I would rather have objective, rational people in any jury, in this case I hope your hubby gets out and you get to spend your anniversary together
