Scary security

31 August 2006 by kristarella

My computer can hibernate and turn back on now! Unfortunately the only change I found on my computer that could have caused the problems was Windows security updates. When I uninstalled them waking up was fine. I just hope Windows doesn’t keep hassling me to install them, I told it not to but I’m pretty sure even when I’ve said that, the same updates have popped up again. I don’t want to unwittingly install the updates and have hibernation die on me again.

You may be asking is hibernation more important to me than security. Yes! Well, in a way, I have firewall and anti-virus and two spy-ware programs so I’m not too worried about a few windows updates.

When your computer doesn’t or can’t hibernate, it may mean that your computer “thinks” that it doesn’t have enough memory to process the hibernation or if you have a particular software actively running in the background. I have suspicions that some MS updates create this sense of false being as I have encountered hibernation problems like that in the past but just haven’t been able to pinpoint it. It does however “mysteriously” dissapear with the next version update. I know for a fact that XP (with Service Pack 2) computers with more than 1 GB of memory may have hibernation problems with with reading/ calculating the amount of RAM available on the computer – it is a known Microsoft bug. The Microsoft technote and download fix is over here:

The worst thing I ever did to my computer was download a Windows update because it said I needed to. I can’t WAIT until I have enough money saved to buy the MacBook I have my eye on. Good-bye Microsoft! 😉

Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Title Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Titles! I was a sub for @jamesxuereb.me in the Blue Flame Dragons thanks to his sprained ankle; we won first round and came fourth overall!
I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
