WCEU 2017: Day 1 (much mad sauce)

WordCamp Europe is off to an amazing start!

We had Contributor Day yesterday, which was jam-packed and seemed to go really well. I liked having it before the conference this time, rather than afterwards, which was the case last year.

This venue is great! I like the fit-out and how each building has a different style. The provision of constant coffee, pastries, water and juice is also pretty sweet.

I am really impressed with the quality of the sponsors, the interesting products they have, and the creative activities they have set up at their stands. Some of those include a video game (Jetpack), a puzzle to complete blind-folded (SiteGround), and robot dancing in return for a hoodie (Robot Ninja). I’m also a big fan of swag! T-shirts, fidget spinners, sunglasses, portable chargers, chewing gum, bags, and stickers galore.

For most of the morning I chatted to the sponsors, took some photos, and collected some of the aforementioned swag. Then I attended John Maeda’s talk Three Kinds of Design, which landed on something he calls Computational Design. The talk hit some of the highlights of his Design in Tech Report for 2017, which you can download from his website as well watch the video of a longer version of the talk. John is so entertaining, informative and thought provoking! Here are some tweets from the talk that hit some of the highlights:

Design isn't about beauty. Good design can save lives. #wceu. @johnmaeda wrote the intro in the book Tragic Design https://t.co/MikyPiM0gK

WordPress can't stay in its bubble. It needs to rub against all the other bubbles to find unlikely partnerships. – @johnmaeda #WCEU pic.twitter.com/njdknSALiG

Those that like things the way they are, keep what's important. If you don't: SHOW UP, add things, make changes. – @johnmaeda #WCEU

Since then I’ve been at the Expert (Happiness) Bar. I helped someone with information about getting started developing with WordPress, and using Git. w00t!

Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Title Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Titles! I was a sub for @jamesxuereb.me in the Blue Flame Dragons thanks to his sprained ankle; we won first round and came fourth overall!
I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
