The Beautiful Sony Ericsson S500i

21 November 2007 by kristarella

Sony Ericsson S500i

When my phone was stolen in July, I wasn’t that disappointed because my MacBook wasn’t stolen! However, my replacement phone didn’t live up to my old one. I couldn’t connect to my computer, I had to import my numbers manually, very limited ringtone and background options (not to mention the amount of space it took up in my pocket). Despite that, it could make and receive calls and messages, so I didn’t want to complain too much.

After 5 months of use, the ringer suddenly didn’t work properly and files were getting corrupted. The menu was doing a magnificent disappearing act… just weeks after I’d decided that while I had a working phone I mustn’t indulge in a new one.

The phone will be fixed under warranty, but since I didn’t have the paper work to put it in for repairs right away (my parents have them), and because it seemed like an opportune time – I bought the sexy new phone.

The main things I wanted were: to be able to transfer files from my computer; mp3 ringtones; to be able to sync contacts and Calendar so I wouldn’t lose my numbers again and I’d know what I was supposed to be doing.

The hottness of this phone

Apart from Bluetooth, actually coming with a USB cable (which Nokia phones don’t), mp3 ringtones and playback, heaps of memory (expandable too), 2MP camera(!) and all the necessities (speed-dial, alarm, calculator, timer – very handy in the lab) it has a gorgeous display:

Setting up the phone

As soon as my phone was showing signs of breaking I synced my numbers on Zyb.com. I was really impressed with Zyb’s service! It’s really easy to use, backs up all your numbers and lets you download them as a v-card file (which you can import into your organiser).

Upon trying to transfer my contacts and calendar using iSync I found it wouldn’t connect to my phone! There was a slight moment of panic before I searched Google for the answer… There are iSync plugins for currently unsupported phones! They work perfectly. 😀
There are others that you can pay for, but the site I linked to is free.

Today I realised that I would like to have internet and MMS access – not because I want to use it all the time, but it would be a bummer if I wanted to and couldn’t. I couldn’t get my carrier’s website to send the settings to my phone, so I called them, waited on hold… and got the settings sent.

Later I got an email from Zyb saying that I hadn’t synced my phone yet and if I needed settings I could download them. I also got an email from Sony Ericsson saying they could provide settings for my carrier – who knew?!

Anyway, Sony Ericsson has some cool downloads for this phone. If you sign up you can get some for free! I downloaded a few, although I’m pretty happy with Everchanging – it’s beautiful!

I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
