StumbleUpon discriminates against my browser

5 November 2007 by kristarella

StumbleUpon browsers

I was reading an excellent article the other day that I thought I would like to bookmark it in StumbleUpon. Whether that meant I was discovering it or voting on it because someone else had discovered it, I don’t know. I also couldn’t find out because you can’t vote on sites without the toolbar and therefore, SU discriminates against my browser!

Presumably for Opera users and certainly for Camino users, somewhere along the line there was a decision to not use Firefox. It’s not that I don’t like Firefox, I love its extensions and flexibility and it’s ability to interpret CSS properly. However, I love Keychain Access more (which Camino, but not Firefox, integrates with).

Yes, I do have Firefox installed (so that I can use the Developers Toolbar every now and then), but it’s just silly to have two browsers open all the time. I’m not going to open FF every time I find a cool site that I want to vote on.

There are some efforts to battle this discrimination, plus some guides and other tools for using SU:

  • StumbleUpon for Opera
  • Toolbarless SU (I’m going to try this)
  • The SU Toolbox
  • Dosh Dosh’s comprehensive guide to SU

The Share This and Sociable buttons make it convenient (and possible!) to vote for sites too.

My main question is how hard could it have been to make a little bookmarklet with a pop-up window? Del.icio.us did it, Tumblr did it. SU has to bloat your browser with a full-on toolbar? Pfft.

That’s why plugins like Share This and Sociable are so popular 🙂

That’s also why I love those plugins! However, the blog that I originally linked to doesn’t use them.
I know that Michael is very anti-clutter, so I’m not sure whether to suggest he use sociable or not. Of course suggesting doesn’t hurt anyone.

Good news! The bookmarklet from the Toolbarless SU site works. 🙂

BTW, I have just added you as my friend in SU 🙂

Those bookmarklets look great. It’s amazing that SU themselves never thought of that…

And thanks for the complement on the article. 😉

    pelf – thanks!

Michael – I know, they’re exactly what I was thinking they should have. I’m so glad someone came up with them! And no worries 😀

Hey. Interesting article. Nice of you to mention a product by My Opera StumbleUpon Team. Because of limitations in the browser you’ll have to copy and paste a URL in the widget to thumbs-up a site, except for the last stumbled site. But you can also submit a site (I think doing that thumbs-ups a site) from a button in most browsers. I use SocialMarker to submit sites to StumbleUpon, and other social networks. Visit http://socialmarker.com/ and follow the instructions. You can also use AddThis! for the same. AddThis does the same as SocialMarker except it’s easier to use when submitting to one site at the time. Just visit http://addthis.com/ and drag the bookmark button to your bookmarks toolbar.
Also, StumbleUpon wants the world to spin around them. They really haven’t shown any wish to support other browsers by adding features to their own servers. Instead, they want every other browser to add obscure features to themselves to be supported.

Oh sorry. Forgot to mention there’s no public release of My Opera StumbleUpon Team’s StumbleUpon widget yet. But it’s coming.

    Oh, thank you so much!

The Toolbarless SU works great in another unsupported browser: K-Meleon

I was beginning to think I couldn’t thumbs-up sites till I bought a new computer. You have made me very happy. 😀

I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
