Upgraded

16 June 2007 by kristarella

Yay, upgraded WordPress to v2.2. Went without a hitch as far as I can tell at this point.

I feel like redesigning this site again. I want to create a homepage that directs to this blog, my photoblog and my deviant art page, and whatever other pages I want to link to. I’m not sure what style to go with. I want to make the pages kind of match and I like rounded corners and gradients and shadows (e.g. Realmac), I’ve been in a mood for that kind of stuff for a while. But I also really like simple lines that are easy to do with CSS and don’t require too many images (e.g. Isak.co.uk). What do you think?

My exam was okay yesterday. As expected really. Some was good, some was average and I didn’t have enough time to write all I knew about some stuff, but I think I conveyed that I knew the content.

I’m trying to learn about HIV, the genetic mechanisms. The lecture we had on it wasn’t that great, she could have just given us the notes and gone home because her speaking to the notes didn’t really add anything. Lots of reading to be done!

Realmac looks awesome. I’ve wanted to make a standard web template (not blogger or wordpress) to use as a website, but…I just haven’t found a program for windows that can do it, or a free web template 😥

I put forward a proposition to get a Mac 😛 It has been denied so far…

Also…just to tell you, the side bar is now underneath the comments box doover-lacky.

Both websites look cool, but I reckon the Realmac style is what you want to go with. If you have a main page which links to all the other bits of your blog, then I reckon most people will skip that page and simply link to the bit they usually view (i.e. your blog or deviant art page). An “all in one” page which shows links to these other aspects is probably better.

The cool pics like the red tree and winter thing you showed the other day could be a good basis for a new design…

Jus – the program Mum has used, Frontpage, makes websites just with HTML. Dreamweaver does too. Otherwise you just use a text editor to write HMTL. If you’re going to write the HTML is very much worthwhile using CSS. Those programs tend to do everything in tables, which is getting outdated. You’re unlikely to find “standard web templates” for download because there really isn’t such a thing. If it’s not a blog or something standard that you’re designing for then a webpage is based around the content and then making that look pretty. It’s more difficult to start with the pretty and add content.
Also, I don’t think I’ll be playing with this template any more, if something isn’t working properly it can wait until I do an overhaul of the whole site. 🙂

Ed – Yeah, I wouldn’t be spending much time making the page that links to everything. It would just be a page to go at the .com. If you go there now it directs you straight to here (.com/blog). While I’m designing I might as well make a pretty page that people can direct themselves with. I also feel silly having a .com when I’m not commercial in any way… it seemed like a good idea when I was choosing it. It’s not like I’m a network or an organisation either. The whole domain extension thing is just weird.
Using thos pics that I’ve already done is a good idea… I made some new ones but I’m a bit stuck, they’re not going anywhere so I think I should start again, perhaps with the tree.

Yeah, I have Frontpage installed. It is good, I like to use the split view so i can see the code and work with that and see what’s happening 🙂

Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Title Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Titles! I was a sub for @jamesxuereb.me in the Blue Flame Dragons thanks to his sprained ankle; we won first round and came fourth overall!
I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
