Switch to Google Reader

20 December 2006 by kristarella

rss iconSince switching to Ubuntu I’ve been using Liferea for reading blogs and news feeds (but mostly blogs). I like it, it’s got a nice layout and is fairly flexible. It is a desktop program, it runs on your computer (as opposed to an online server) so it’s not accessible from everywhere.

Online aggregators are very handy, since I heard that Google updated their feed reader with all the features I wanted (folders, individual marking of posts, display of updated feeds, option of seeing only the new items or all of them etc), and since I cleaned up my reading list and updated it on both Liferea and Google Reader, I’ve been using Google Reader at work. It’s very handy in between jobs and I quite like the layout. I’ll admit that it can be a little slow in loading, but usually that’s because of the stupid work computer. So I’ve decided to use Google Reader as my main feed reader. Hopefully it will be more convenient than starting another application on my desktop and I won’t have to mark posts as ‘read’ on each reader separately.

I use two of these web-based readers. One won’t read some blogs. I don’t know why. I am not thrilled with transferring the blogs I read again. sigh I don’t know.

I used to use Bloglines and it had problems with my photoblog feed but Google Reader didn’t have a problem with it. Never figured out why since at the time I was using the same WordPress installation as my blog. I’ve changed my photoblog software now though, hopefully there’s no problem.

Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Title Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Titles! I was a sub for @jamesxuereb.me in the Blue Flame Dragons thanks to his sprained ankle; we won first round and came fourth overall!
I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
