Filofax

11 December 2006 by kristarella

diaryI don’t know what it is about diaries, but I just love them. It’s funny because I’m so useless at being on time to anything, I was even late to church last night and I was doing the prayer. I’m sure Philip was just a bit worried, especially since one of the bible readers didn’t turn up as well. He did a good thing getting his son to hand out run-sheets to the late comers (me). It all worked out and was a really good service, I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know.

Anyway, back to the diaries. We got school diaries at High School, they were great for recording homework, birthdays, sometimes we even counted down to our birthdays. We decorated the heck out of them, which I guess is why I got so upset when mine was stolen one year. Stupid thing to steal right? I think it was a joke but then when the joke was over no one knew where the diary was 🙁 I kind of stopped using diaries when I got tired of decorating them and I started remembering everything I had to do in my head.

Then I had a sudden urge to buy a diary for 2005. I expect it was because I was getting married and needed to write down all associated dates and information. I got a really cool Letts one, it was A6 size, metal “wiro” binding, black and silver plastic cover, with a flap and button to close it and protect the pages. I tied a ribbon from a present around the binding to make it more girly and kept a pen in the binding. I was able to stick my timetable inside the front cover so I knew which class to go to. It was all very convenient. I liked that diary so much that when I saw one for 2006 with translucent pink plastic covers and swirly spot patterns inside I had to snaffle it up before anyone else had the chance. I love that diary and it’s been fairly well used.

“The time has come,” the Walrus said,
“To write of many things:
Of days – and sleeps – and
birthday songs –
Of weddings – and rings –
And why my brain is filling up –
And when I have to sing.”

So now it’s nearing the end of the year and I was starting to accumulate dates for next year in my head. I was perusing the new papers and notebooks section in Borders, they obviously have a new deal with Paperchase because they have the most beautiful array of papers and bags and books. They also have some Filofaxes in that section that are just gorgeous. I would have loved to get this one but as you can see, the price is a tad excessive (I recognise that it’s good quality leather but what do I need real leather for?). So another day I wandered into a newsagent to see what diaries they had to offer and saw some by The Last Diary Company. They had (nearly) exactly what I wanted; a diary about A6 size, soft-to-touch cover, flap with button to keep it closed, pen holder. I got it in “moss green”. The only thing it doesn’t have that I use a lot is the page marker, I don’t know if Last Diary sell them but I’m pretty sure that the Filofax ones will fit in it. Already I have family birthdays and 5 weddings in my new diary!

I had a fleeting thought the other week that my love for diaries could be seen as lack of trust in God. Like in James 4:

13Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”– 14yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

Then I realised that nothing in my diary (so far) is about making money and I’m completely happy (okay, so maybe for some things I’d be disappointed but I’m still willing) for God to change my plans at any time. So I don’t think I fall into those first few verses. Still probably need to work on 17 though.

Congratulations if you reached the end of this post!
