Winners

4 September 2006 by kristarella

compI’ve finally decided the winners for the Self Portrait Competition. It wasn’t easy, let me tell you! I really liked all the entries for their own uniqueness. I will explain some of what I liked about each but for now how about the winners?

3rd place:
weird beard
I love the crazy beard. I like that the image is coloured although with a pirate theme I might have gone with red. I like how somber he looks with such a silly beard.

2nd place:
intricate art
There’s no doubt that this is just good! It’s different, not just a photo or Photoshop effect (not that I didn’t love those). I imagine it’s somewhat reminiscent of how the artist actually looks but at the same time it’s an illustration!

1st place:
fenton
What a great expression! I love black and white, it’s so dignified and classic. Good light, good framing. I like it.

Those that didn’t win anything but made me smile for entering and made the decision more difficult were:
Mags, whose entry is in the comments, it’s very obscure, kind of abstract which I suppose is like Mags – full of randomivity.
Elizabeth, whose entry just seemed so full of emotion and mystery.
Shellibells, whose entry made me go “Woah, oh my goodness” and then when I got over the shock value I liked it for the attitude displayed.
Mar, whose portrait is very unique and quite spiffy, you can see why.
Finally… Beth, whose portrait I think really reflects herself, what she likes and what she is like.

Thanks for playing! I think I’ll come up with a new competition soon.

    Hey Kristen,

Thanks for the nice comments about the beard. I was indeed proud of its exceeding weirdness. I coloured the picture both to make it look artistic and portraity (as opposed to the slightly self-indulgent) and because while I was playing around with the colours and contrast I realised the yellow put the beard into a nice contrast which looked better.

But hey, I’m no artiste. Thanks for the kudos.

Nice! I reckon that’s as good a reason as any for yellow 🙂

Congrats to the winners-although I must say-the obsurity and randomivity of my picture DID match my personality.

Just joking-the winners were MUCH better!!! Congrats!

Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Title Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Titles! I was a sub for @jamesxuereb.me in the Blue Flame Dragons thanks to his sprained ankle; we won first round and came fourth overall!
I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
