Karmin around

2 September 2006 by kristarella

Jeepers! Spam Karma ate some real comments! Thanks Foo for bring it to my attention. Also thanks for renting here the past week. It was a pleasure to have you around!

My spare room is up for rent again so please click over there if you’d like to bid. You might also like to check out my Rent My Blog page for more details on renting here.

On other blogging news, entries for my Self Portrait Competition closed last weekend and I’ll be announcing the winners this weekend! There were seven entries and they’re all different and creative so that’s a bit exciting. I feel like I should go into school teacher mode and create a marking scheme or something. Maybe I’ll just stare at them for a really long time… we’ll see 😛

Given the recent craziness with commenting I might install some more plug-ins. These could include a preview one that shows you what your comment looks like – this will allow you to make sure links and spelling and pictures are correct. I’ve also had a nested comments plug-in on my computer for a while but I haven’t installed it. It allows you to reply directly to other comments and nests them so it’s obvious which comments relate to each other. Live Journal does this and many discussion forums have that layout. I thought it might make it easy for me to reply to Thursday Thirteen comments rather than emailing everyone back individually. I’d like to know your opinion on these sorts of features.

Last week I wrote a Thursday Thirteen with sites I find useful for web design. This post from Tina at Recommended is excellent for color tools and inspiration for creating a nice web page design.

On a completely different topic, I strained a muscle in my thumb and wrist playing Nintendo. I couldn’t figure out why my wrist hurt and thought it must have been from karate. Later I realised that it’s because one of our controllers has a really dodgy left arrow and it took all my thumb strength, sometimes more to get Donkey Kong to go left. Thankfully hubby is getting some more controllers. 😀

Might I suggest, if this is possible, to change the way the Spam Karma 2 bar at the bottom looks for the following reasons:
    1. The links are really hard to read, and become even harder when you hover over them…

and 2. The grey-ish- colour doesn’t match your template…at all…so, if it is possible to edit the config of it, I suggest you do so. If not…then perhaps with a bit of exploration, you could get rid of it, and place a box in the sidebar…

    🙂 Justin

Justin’s right… the link color may have to be changed to be visible.

the nested comments plug-in is a good idea … like in the forums. i’ll have to get it and test it out on my blog. do you have the plug-in URL handy?

one more plug-in which I think is handy on my blog is the “subscribe to comment” plug-in. I think it is great as it allows the commentor to be notified if any new comments were added on the relevant post (you won’t get notified if there aren’t any comments)- a good way to stay in touch with replies within a post instead of coming back to the post to check the comments area for updates AND I believe a good way for past readers/commentors to come back to comment if they feel the need. It has a mechanism to “unsubscribe” too for those who don’t really want to get notifications anymore.

The threaded comments plugin site is here. It’s a bit scary and I son’t know if I’m going to install it. I have several things included in my comments.php that I don’t think will be in the file that you need to upload with the plugin installation, things like smilies, gravatars, quick tag buttons, they might all disappear, and I’m finding the php rather daunting I don’t know where to insert them.
Thanks for the tip on subscribing to comments. I’ve intalled that plugin.
Thanks Jus, I’ve removed the unsightly Spam Karma footer since I couldn’t change the colours.

Ah! I just installed nested comment and I’m very nervous about it! The font is overlapping the gravatars, which is gross. I need to style the whole set up a little more to my liking. Other than than it works!!! Idon’t have time to fix it all up now but it’s functional so yay!

I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
