Message in a bottle

8 July 2006 by kristarella

Have you ever wanted to send a message in a bottle? I always have! The site Unsent Letters was brought to our attention by Tina . It is a similar idea, a letter that the addressed will not read (or extremely unlikely).

I did write a letter intended to go in a bottle and floated down a stream where I used to go for bush walks. I never sent it though. It stayed under my mattress for a while until I threw it away. I don’t remember if it was written to the teacher I had a crush on at school; give me a break, he was hot! But yes I am also a mega nerd. Or maybe to that person that would make smile just by being there or make me cry tears of happiness just by holding me. I don’t actually do that now (all the time anyway, I do the smiling thing sometimes at least), I was a romantic yet angsty adolescent/teenager, what can I say?

I haven’t really had that tragic kind of love life that has caused me to throw letters in the ocean, I’m probably too young! I also hope to not feel the need, I like my hubby being right here where I can tell him whatever I want. Of course you can have letters in bottles that are intended to be read, for that you don’t throw them in the sea. I gave hubby his anniversary thing in a bottle.

Naturally someone has decided to market the idea. Message in a Bottle and Letter in a Bottle are two of these ventures. Message in a Bottle allows you to have the bottle engraved and the edges of the paper burned if you want for specialness and “authenticity”. I wonder what is authentic about it… do people often burn the edges of their letters? Aren’t bottles supposed to protect the letter? Or maybe it’s the idea that one wrote the letter by candle light and naturally so burns are bound to happen. It’s a cute idea, isn’t it great that the net makes all these things available to us?!

I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
