Haiku for City Rail

22 March 2006 by kristarella

Oh, how I hate trains!
Unreliable machines,
great incompetence.

I’ve been late everyday this week. I know it sounds like I should catch an earlier train but I really shouldn’t need to. I’m already shattered from sleepiness and it is. The train that I catch should make it on time and has done before. Last year I used to catch a train 10 or 15 minutes later and get to uni 10 minutes earlier than I do these days. This morning, my inspiration for haiku, the train was a few minutes late to my home station, then when we got to Strathfeild it sat for 5 or 10 minutes (I was asleep but aware of not moving) and then there was an anouncement about some kind of mechanical or technical hitch and they’d be fixed in a little while but if we wanted to get to Central quickly we should get off and get on another train. The other train stopped at more stops and was so full from the people on the first train I was on that people at subsequent stations couldn’t get on.

Last year the train timetables were changed. They added five minutes onto journeys so that the timetable reflected the actual travel time. They also redefined late from 4 minutes after scheduled time to 6 minutes after scheduled time, I assume that this means their statistics will be a little better. They actually did do quite well at first, trains did run to timetable. They’re crap again now though. Last Wednesday it rained – there is some kind of universal rule that all transport ceases to function effectively in the wet. I was an hour late to uni.

Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Title Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Titles! I was a sub for @jamesxuereb.me in the Blue Flame Dragons thanks to his sprained ankle; we won first round and came fourth overall!
I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
