How to boil an egg

31 January 2006 by kristarella

Isn’t boiling an egg one of those things that is innate? Aren’t we just born with the knowledge of some things? Apparently not.

As my husband and I contemplated our very sparse fridge after going to the supermarket, both of us without a wallet, we decided that boiled eggs was the most appealing dinner option.

I said to my hubby “You know how to boil an egg right?” He said, “Yeah [exasperated tone], you bring the water to a boil drop the eggs in and boil them for four minutes.” I said “No, if you do that the shells will crack and the whites will go in the water.” We looked at each other rather puzzled and he grabbed a cook book off the shelf. Find a “recipe” for boiling an egg we tried that.

It said to bring the water to a boil and then bring it back to a “rolling boil” and lower the eggs in slowly with a spoon then cook for five minutes. So we did that. One of the shells cracked and the whites were still runny after five minutes. So we popped those remaining back in and then they were done but no runny yolk for dipping bread1 into. I think we just missed the runny yolk.

Next time it will be six minutes at a “rolling boil”.

1 Focaccia bread that has been in the freezer for quite some time. We are actually out of regular bread.

Ahhh. I’ve been at the “I guess it’s eggs for dinner” stage.

Good thing I love breakfast and could eat it for every meal.

And I don’t think some people even know how to boil water….really.

No, silly! You put eggs in cold water, bring it to the boil, and it’s three minutes from when the first bubble breaks the surface. 🙂

Oh wait, I’ve never actually cooked a boiled egg.

    Owl.

Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Title Had a great Saturday at the GKR Karate State Titles! I was a sub for @jamesxuereb.me in the Blue Flame Dragons thanks to his sprained ankle; we won first round and came fourth overall!
I did a bunch of judging and officiating, which was really good.
I didn’t place in my individual events, but had a very fun final round of kumite (sparring).
